Sanctuary for Families is New York’s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.
The Matrimonial Project Assistant provides comprehensive litigation support, as well as direct client assistance, case management, and advocacy on behalf of clients being served in matrimonial cases including uncontested or contested divorce proceedings, family court proceeding, post-judgment enforcement, or cases with an international litigation component. Due to Covid-19, position is hybrid between remote and in-person at this time.
- Assists project attorneys in all aspects of family law/matrimonial litigation support, including drafting and editing legal documents, conducting client interviews and intakes, writing correspondence, gathering evidence, maintaining case tracking systems, and filing, picking up, and serving court papers;
- Performs direct client advocacy, including conducting client interviews, assisting attorneys with case preparation, and accompanying clients to appointments with various service providers and governmental agencies;
- Conducts intake interviews to screen and assess clients for legal services and other needs and refers client to appropriate internal and external service providers;
- Performs administrative tasks, including data compilation, word processing, and organizing office or virtual filing system;
- Represents Sanctuary for Families on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency, including committees serving the Orthodox Jewish community and maintains relationships with such entities;
- Organizes and conducts outreach and education about domestic violence and related forms of gender violence;
- Collaborates with clinicians and other advocates in and outside of the agency to secure best results for clients;
- Assists project attorneys in organizing trainings for staff, interns, law students, and volunteers;
- Provides logistical support to project attorneys in the administration of the Uncontested Divorce Project, including organizing trainings for law students participating in the Uncontested Divorce Project;
- Provides case management and resource access for clients as needed;
- Complete grant requests on behalf of clients as needed;
- Performs any other department or agency-related duties as directed by supervisor.
- BA or relevant work experience;
- Fluency in a second language REQUIRED, preferably Spanish;
- Family law or other paralegal experience preferred;
- Excellent oral advocacy, communication, research and writing skills;
- Excellent problem solving, facilitation and conflict resolution skills;
- Excellent organizational abilities, initiative and attention to detail;
- Self-motivated with an ability to prioritize and problem-solve;
- Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner and as a part of a team;
- Ability to develop collaborative relationships with legal and social services providers;
- Flexibility to adapt to different situations;
- Willingness and ability to work with people from a variety of racial, cultural and economic service backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, and of all ages;
- Demonstrated commitment and interest in providing legal services to the low-income community;
- Proficient knowledge of computer software, including experience conducting legal research on Lexis and the internet. Working Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, MS Access required.
Budgeted Salary: $45,000
Work position is hybrid.
